Increasing anger over unemployment, low salaries, lack of essential amenities and continued inequality is demonstrated in the widespread âservice deliveryâ protests of the post-apartheid period, particularly in the large-scale public sector strikes that occurred across South Africa in mid-2007. In the latter, the previous vanguard of the resistance, the urban work force, criticised the ruling party, demanding quicker and genuine redress and more equitable economic distribution. Reflecting a similar sentiment, Beat It! broadcast many indictments of government negligence and inefficiency as voiced by support group members, expert guests and members of the public. However, even though these critiques were often intensified by damning visual evidence of the obstruction failure to solve social and health crises, the purpose of the programme was not to alienate the government. Rather, it aimed to ensure that the Constitution was upheld and that people could access the services to which they were entitled. For instance, in an episode from the 2005 series on the antiretroviral roll-out, a young woman named Nozuko Smile shouted to a crowd of protesters:
